Glaciar Martial
For first-rate views of the Beagle Channel and the islands of Chile, you can head to the hanging Glaciar Martial, 7km behind town; walk up the steep Luis Martial road, or take a bus from the Muelle Turístico (half-hourly 9.30am–1pm; return hourly 1–6pm; $10 return), and then climb or take the chairlift ($25) from behind the Cumbres del Martial. Take sun protection: the effects of the ozone layer hole can result in fierce solar radiation at these latitudes. During the winter, Glaciar Martial offers the closest decent skiing to Ushuaia.
