3 Chez Manu Luis Martial 2135 02901/432253 www.chezmanu.com Stunning panoramic views from huge windows and gourmet French food using local produce – centolla, of course, plus fish, melt-in-the-mouth lamb and seafood – make this one of the city's most sought-after dining spots, though it is a bit expensive.

4 Chocolates Ushuaia San Martín 783 www.chocolates-ushuaia.com.ar Simple café and chocolatería serving a fair range of chunky sandwiches, though most patrons are here for the great hot chocolate, accompanied by an enormous slab of cake or two.

5 Gustino Maipú and Lasserre 02901/430003 www.gustino.com.ar Smart new restaurant attached to the Hotel Albatros, with full length-window views of the Beagle Channel, where you can wash down creative regional dishes with a glass of vino from the most comprehensive wine cellar in town.

7 La Rueda San Martín 193 The best of a cluster of parrillas at the western end of San Martín, serving generous portions of well-cooked lamb at knockdown prices. Tackling the popular tenedor libre will satiate even the strongest carnivore cravings.
