The Alto Delta islands
Known as the Alto Delta, the low-lying islands off Rosario's "coast" in fact fall under the jurisdiction of the neighbouring province, Entre Ríos. Like the islands of the Tigre Delta, in Buenos Aires, they host subtropical vegetation fed by sediment from the Upper Paraná River. The Alto Delta is far less developed than Tigre, however. With the exception of the more remote island of Charigüé, where there is a small settlement that has its own school, police station and a handful of restaurants, it is largely uninhabited. If you can afford it, the best way of seeing the Delta is on an excursion; try Rosario-based Carlos Vaccarezza (
0341/156-156066) or El Holandés (
0341/156-415880). Alternatively, there are various islands offering camping facilities, accommodation and restaurants which you can reach by one of the regular passenger services from the Estación Fluvial, or by arranging to be picked up by the owners.
Isla Buenaventura (
0341/155-425607), a resort on the island of the same name due east of Rosario, offers accommodation in well-equipped bungalows holding up to four people (Price: $75-90) with kitchen, private bathroom and fans. The friendly and ecologically minded young owners also offer canoeing trips along the Riacho Los Marinos and beyond plus guided walks into the island's wild interior. You can also camp in the interior (no facilities). Some provisions can be supplied on the island, including fresh fish from local fishermen, but you should bring extra with you if you're planning on staying for a while. In addition to the regular passenger service, you can arrange to be picked up by the island's owners ($40 return trip for up to four people). Just next door to Isla Buenaventura there's an excellent restaurant, La Aldea (
0341/156-177402), where extremely fresh fish is cooked to order and can be eaten at one of the outside tables on the riverbank. Another option is the Cabañas del Francés (
0341/155-473045; Price: $90-150 for five to seven people; 20 percent discount for two people or single), where there are attractive rustic-style cabañas and a bar. There is no regular boat service to the cabañas, but the owner will pick up a party of up to five people from the mainland.
