Argentina Guide
Neuquén and the Lake District
Rincón de los Sauces
Further afield, 250km northwest of Neuquén along RP-8, is the isolated town of Rincón de los Sauces, home to the Museo Argentino Urquiza (Mon– Fri 8am–6pm;
0299/488-6643). The collection features the only known fossils of a titanosaurus, including an almost complete specimen, but what makes the trip worthwhile are the fossilized set of titanosaur eggs from nearby Auca Mahuida. The first set of dinosaur eggs ever to be found, they are approximately 14cm in diameter and have thin, porous shells through which the embryonic dinosaurs are thought to have breathed. Accommodation in town is limited and pricey, but a decent option is Hotel Express (
0299/488-6870,
www.ehotelexpress.com ; Price: $210-300), at Gregorio Alvarez y San Martin.
