Neuquén and the Lake District
Neuquén
The bustling provincial capital of NEUQUÉN sits at the confluence of the rivers Neuquén and Limay, whose waters unite to become the Río Negro. With a population of 215,000, this plains metropolis functions as the commercial, industrial and financial centre of the surrounding fruit- and oil-producing region. It's a surprisingly attractive and friendly place to pass a few days, the local government having worked hard in recent years to change the city's industrial image: there are now a cluster of museums as good as anywhere else in the region, and a beach resort on the banks of the Río Limay that is an excellent place to relax after a hard day on the road.
