Buenos Aires Guide
Palermo
Palermo is Buenos Aires' largest and leafiest barrio, stretching all the way from Recoleta to Colegiales and Belgrano (a distance of over 4km from south to north), and from the river to Avenida Córdoba. As you might expect of such a vast area, its character is by no means homogenous – indeed, Palermo really encompasses several distinct sub-neighbourhoods, each with a different feel. Three of these areas will be of most interest to visitors: Palermo Chico, a haven of tranquillity that boasts some of the city's most exclusive residences, including a number of embassies; middle-class southern Palermo, which takes in both Alto Palermo – the location of a major shopping mall, high-rise blocks of flats and a grassy park – and a residential district with such a high concentration of psychoanalysts it has become known as Villa Freud; and mostly low-rise Palermo Viejo, which itself is divided still further into boho-chic Palermo Soho and media-linked Palermo Hollywood.
