Getting around

The train system, run by TCDD ( www.tcdd.gov.tr ) is limited. The most useful services are the expresses between İstanbul and Ankara, and other long-distance links to main provincial cities such as Edirne, Konya, Denizli and İzmir. Cheap sleeper cabins are available on overnight services. Reservations are only necessary at weekends or on national holidays. An ISIC card gets a 20 percent discount. InterRail passes are valid, Eurail aren't.

Long-distance buses are a more reliable way of getting around. Most routes are covered by several competing firms, which all have ticket booths at the bus station (otogar or terminal) from which they operate, as well as an office in the town centre. Fares vary only slightly between companies: expect to pay about 10YTL/100km. For short hops you're most likely to use a dolmuş, a car or minibus that follows a set route, picking up and dropping off along the way. Sometimes the destination will be posted on a sign at the kerbside, and sometimes within the dolmuş itself, though you'll generally have to ask. Fares are very low.

Nearly all ferries are run by Türkiye Denizcilik Işletmesi (TDI), who operate everything from inner-city shuttles and inter-island lines to international routes. Overnight services are popular, and you should buy tickets in advance through authorized TDI agents. A third-class double cabin from İstanbul to İzmir costs about € per person. Students get a thirty percent discount with an ISIC card.
