Umeå
UMEÅ is the biggest city in northern Sweden, with a population of around 105,000. Demographically, it's probably Sweden's most youthful city, with an average age of just 36, no doubt influenced by the presence of Norrland University and its 25,000 students. Strolling around the centre, you'll notice that those who aren't in pushchairs are pushing them, while the cafés and city parks are full of teenagers. With its fast-flowing river and wide, stylish boulevards, Umeå is a distinctly likeable city, and it's no bad idea to spend a couple of days here sampling some of the bars and restaurants – the variety of which you won't find elsewhere in Norrland.
