Around Stockholm

    Map

Such are Stockholm's attractions, it's easy to overlook the city's surroundings; yet only a few kilometres from the centre the countryside becomes noticeably leafier, the islands less congested and the water brighter. As further temptation, some of the country's most fascinating sights are within easy reach, like the spectacular Millesgården sculpture museum at Lidingö and Drottningholm, Sweden's greatest royal palace. Other trips from Stockholm – out into the stunning archipelago or to the university town of Uppsala – really merit more time, although if you're pressed it's possible to travel to each and return the same day.

Bear in mind that while the Stockholm Card and 1- and 3-day cards are valid on bus, T-bana and regional train services within Greater Stockholm, you can't use them on the more enjoyable boat services to Drottningholm or in the archipelago.
