Despite its reputation as a hard-nosed and gritty industrial centre, Kranj, Slovenia's fourth-largest city, possesses an attractive old city centre severely at odds with its drab surrounds. Positioned on a steep, rocky promontory above the confluence of the Sava and Kokra rivers, between the foothills of the Julian Alps and the western spur of the Kamniške-Savinja Alps, Kranj has been the country's most important industrial city since the end of World War I. It is home to several of Slovenia's major manufacturing industries, including textiles, leather and electronics, which in total employ almost half of the city's population. However, beyond the grimescape of smoking chimneys, the old town possesses a clutch of fine late-Gothic buildings, and the city's strong associations with France Prešeren – he lived, worked and died here – are manifest in an excellent museum.
