Porto

Map

Portugal's second-largest city and capital of the north, PORTO, is dramatically situated at the mouth of the Rio Douro, its old quarters scrambling up the rocky north bank in tangled tiers. The attraction of the city lies largely in the contrast between the prosperous business core and the earthy charm of its Ribeira area, where the cobbled warren of steep alleys and passages appears to have changed little in centuries. It's well worth a couple of days of your time – more if you plan to make a serious attempt at touring the port-wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river.

Highlights

1 Douro river cruise Pass under the city bridges, or let the vineyards drift by, on a trip along the "River of Gold".

2 Fundação Serralves Don't miss the contemporary art gallery, housed in an amazing building by Portugal's leading architect and surrounded by the city's most enjoyable park.

3 Touring the port-wine lodges, Vila Nova de Gaia Wine tastings and tours galore are offered by the country's leading port wine producers.
