Lithuania Guide

Weather

Late spring and summer are the best times to visit Lithuania, when there's usually enough fine weather to allow you to stroll around the cities and make significant forays into the great outdoors. Mostly though, the only thing that's predictable about the climate is the deep, dark winters – in all other seasons the weather can be changeable.

Summers are relatively short (roughly mid-June to late August), and although you may experience hot, dry weather during this period, rain and cold nights are equally likely. You should bring warm and waterproof clothing alongside your T-shirts.

Temperatures cool down rapidly after mid-September, although autumn can be exceptionally beautiful.

The first snow falls as early as mid-November, and by December winter sets in with a vengeance. Average temperatures can remain below zero up until March, occasionally plummeting to minus 15–20°C. Winter can be magical, frosted with ice and snow. However, rural areas can be difficult to get to without four-wheel-drive, and you'll have to be bundled up very warmly in order to endure anything but the shortest of walks. Wherever you are in winter, bring a hat.

Even when the spring thaw sets in, the countryside can remain grey and barren until well into April, when a sudden explosion of colour transforms the landscape.
