1 Author Pick Bambi I, Frankel Leó utca 2–4. One of the few surviving socialist-realist bars, with stern waitresses and red plastic-covered seats. They serve breakfast, omelettes, snack lunches, cakes and alcohol all day long. Opening time: Mon– Fri 7am–9pm, Sat & Sun 9am–8pm

2 Kecskeméti Borozó II, Széna tér. By Moszkva tér, on the corner of Retek utca, this is a crowded, sweaty and smoky stand-up wine bar. A notice on the wall reads "We do not serve drunks", but that would rule out most of the people inside. However, they do serve that staple of Hungarian bar fare, zsíros kenyér. Opening time: Mon– Sat 9am–11pm

3 Author Pick Lánchíd Söröző I, Fő utca 4. Atmospheric little bar, handily placed at the Buda end of the Lánchíd. It's a quiet place in daytime, frequented by tourists and the odd regular, but in the evening Robi, the manager, brings in concert DVDs – he loves his music, as the photos of him with BB King and others on the walls testify. Excellent toasted sandwiches. Opening time: Daily 10am– midnight

4 Móri Borozó I, Fiáth János utca 16. Cheap neighbourhood venue just up from Moszkva tér, with darts and bar billiards in the room at the far end. Opening time: June– Aug daily 4–11pm; Sept– May Mon– Sat 2–11pm, Sun 2–9pm
