    1 BÁV V, Ferenciek tere 10. One of numerous BÁV outlets in the city, this one specializes in paintings, jewellery and other treasures. They hold regular auctions at V, Bécsi utca 1. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 9am–1pm

    2 Sóos V, József Attila utca 22. An excellent place to pick up some fine junk and secondhand photographic goods. Opening time: Mon– Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    3 Dovin Galéria V, Galamb utca 6 1/318-3673 www.dovingaleria.hu Elegant gallery in central Pest selling contemporary Hungarian art. Opening time: Tues– Fri noon–6pm, Sat 11am–2pm

    4 Author Pick Bestsellers V, Október 6 utca 11 1/312-1295. Excellent range of English books, with English and Hungarian literature, travel and reference books, and newspapers too. Staff are friendly and can order books in. Opening time: Mon– Fri 9am–6.30pm, Sat 10am–5pm, Sun 10am–4pm

    5 Honterus V, Múzeum körút 35. Engravings, postcards and secondhand books. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–2pm

    6 Központi Antikvárium V, Múzeum körút 17. Large secondhand bookshop with some antiquarian books and prints too. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6.30pm, Sat 10am–2pm

    7 Libri V, Váci utca 22. The Studium branch in Váci utca is a foreign language specialist store, and has a good stock of books on Hungary. English-language and travel books are upstairs at Rákoczi út 12, where you'll also find a small internet café. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–7pm, Sat– Sun 10am–3pm

    8 Kodály Zoltán Zeneműbolt V, Múzeum körút 21. Scores of CDs, tapes and secondhand Hungarian classical records, opposite the Hungarian National Museum. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    9 MCD V, Sütő utca 2. CD megastore behind the Lutheran church on Deák tér. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    10 Author Pick Rózsavölgyi Zeneműbolt V, Szervita tér 5. Long-established record shop with a knowledgeable staff, near Vörösmarty tér. Classical music on the ground floor, rock and folk downstairs. It has a concert ticket office at the back, and is good for sheet music as well. Opening time: Mon– Fri 9.30am–7pm (Wed 10am), Sat 10am–5pm

    11 Eclectick V, Irányi utca 20. Clothes designed by Edina Farkas, and a retro shop – toys and more – in the basement. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 11am–4pm

    12 Emilia Anda V, Váci utca 16/b and Galamb utca 4. Classy, well-designed day and evening wear for women, and a range of jewellery including chunky rings and beautiful pendants. Opening time: Mon– Fri 11am–6pm, Sat 11am–2pm

    13 Iguana V, Krúdy Gyula utca 9. A packed, stuffy shop selling all kinds of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s retro fashion – clothes, bags, music, sunglasses and jewellery. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    14 Manier V, Nyáry Pál utca 4 www.manier.hu . Zany, appealing clothes by Anikó Németh; the designs have calmed down from the Baroque early days but they retain plenty of inventiveness. The first-floor shop/workshop is just off the lower half of Váci utca, behind no. 48. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm

    15 Valéria Fazekas V, Váci utca 50. Another of the more creative places on the lower part of Váci utca, this small shop produces delightful hats, some wacky and some very wearable. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–4pm

    16 Holló Folk Art Gallery V, Vitkovics Mihály utca 10. This beautiful early nineteenth-century shop near the Astoria is a very pleasant place in which to browse wares such as intricately iced gingerbread figures, and wooden furniture, boxes, eggs and candlesticks, all hand-painted with bird, tulip and heart folk motifs. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    17 Intuita V, Váci utca 67. Amid the tourist tat at the main market hall end of Váci utca, this shop stands out for its quality Hungarian pottery and jewellery. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    18 Bio ABC V, Múzeum körút 19. Natural oils, organic fruits, juices, cheeses and snacks. Opposite the Hungarian National Museum. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–7pm, Sat 10am–2pm

    19 La Boutique des Vins V, József Attila utca 12 1/266-4397 www.malatinszky.hu . Founded by the former sommelier of the Gundel restaurant who now has a vineyard of his own. Strongest in wines from Villány and Tokaj. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sept– May also Sat 10am–3pm
