    1 Hold utca V, Hold utca 13. Right behind the American Embassy, this fine nineteenth-century market hall still has some smaller holders selling their produce. Opening time: Mon– Fri 6am–5pm, Sat 6am–1pm

    2 Lehel Hall XIII, Lehel tér. Large, popular market housed in a wacky new market hall designed by the former dissident László Rajk – whatever you think of the exterior, it's a lively place inside with lots of small stalls. Opening time: Mon– Fri 6am–5pm, Sat 6am–1pm, Sun 6am– noon

    3 CEU bookshop V, Zrinyi utca 12 . Attached to the Central European University, this has mainly academic books and a good selection of Hungarian literature in English. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm

    4 Author Pick Wave VI, Révay utca 4. Small CD shop off the bottom of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út; staff are well-informed on its range of underground and Hungarian folk. They also sell tickets to concerts. Opening time: Mon– Fri 11am–7pm, Sat 11am–3pm

    5 Katti Zoób V, Szent István körút 17 www.kattizoob.com . Among the band of young designers who've made a big splash with their products, Zoób is one of the most successful, and uses gorgeous fabrics. She has also collaborated with the porcelain company Zsolnay to produce jewellery. Her store is inside the courtyard to the right. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    6 Herend V, József nádor tér 11, www.herend.com . Very fancy – some would say twee – and expensive porcelain from the Herend factory in western Hungary, as collected by the likes of Queen Victoria. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    7 Author Pick Ómama Bizsúja V, Szent István körút 1. A tiny treasure-trove of a shop – its entrance is tucked in to the left as you walk down the passageway that leads from the street at the Pest end of the Margit híd. Absolutely crammed full of jewellery – in amongst the more glitzy costume jewellery there are some stunning Deco-style pieces and good-quality paste. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    8 Wladis Galéria V, Falk Miksa utca 13 www.wladisgaleria.hu . Founded by a lecturer at the Applied Arts College the workshop produces very appealing chunky silver jewellery at a price: rings from 20,000Ft and earrings from 29,000Ft. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 10am–1pm

    9 Author Pick Budapest Wine Society V, Szent István tér 3 1/328-0314 www.bortarsasag.hu . The most central branch of what's become the major distributor of Hungary's leading producers, with excellent wines and good advice in English. There are two more outlets in the centre: a larger store at Batthyány utca 59, up the hill from Moszkva tér, and a smaller one at Ráday utca 7, near Kálvin tér. Opening time: Mon– Fri noon–8pm, Sat 10am–4pm
