Kauppatori

    market2

There's more colour and liveliness along the waterfront among the stalls of the kauppatori, or market square (Mon Thurs 8am–5.30pm, Fri 8am–6pm, Sat 8am–3pm), laden with fresh fruit and vegetables; you can buy fresh fish directly from the boats moored around the edge of the harbour and, if your principles allow it, the market is also the best place to buy fur – mink and fox hats and coats are cheaper here than in the city's many fur salons. Owners of classic American cars – Finland has thousands of them – gather to show their cars off on the square the first Friday of each month.
