Helsinki and the south

Esplanadi

The twin thoroughfares of Pohjoisesplanadi and Eteläesplanadi are together known as Esplanadi. At the height of the Swedish/Finnish language conflict that divided the nation during the mid-nineteenth century, this neat boulevard was where opposing factions demonstrated their allegiance – the Finns walking on the south side and the Swedes on the north. Nowadays it's dominated at lunchtime by office workers, later in the afternoon by buskers, and at night by strolling couples and imbibing, skateboarding teens. Musical accompaniment is provided free on summer evenings from the hut in the middle of the walk – expect anything from a Salvation Army band to rock groups.
