Trinidad and Tobago Guide
Entry requirements
Citizens of EU countries (as well as Switzerland and Norway), the US and Canada do not require a visa for stays of less than three months. Nationals of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa all need visas before entering the country. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the period of your proposed visit. Even if you are entitled to stay for up to three months, the immigration officer may stamp your passport for exactly the length of time that you state you will be staying in the country. It is a good idea to exaggerate the length of your stay to avoid going through the hassle of getting a visa extension should your travel plans change.
If you intend to travel between Trinidad and Venezuela using the ferry service at Pier One in Chaguaramas, you must have a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.
Visa extensions are usually for an extra three months, but this depends on your reasons for wanting to stay; they are issued by the Immigration Office, 67 Frederick St, Port of Spain (Mon-Thurs 7am-4pm, Fri 7am-3:45pm;
625 3571). You must first make an appointment to see an immigration officer; a one-week wait is typical. Bring your passport and, if you have one, a return ticket (the latter is only sometimes asked for), as well as the TT$50 visa fee and TT$100 extension fee. The policy regarding visa extensions is subject to change, and a lot can depend on the individual officer dealing with your case.
Applications for work permits, which are required for certain types of paid and unpaid employment , can be made at the Ministry of National Security, Temple Court, 31-33 Abercromby St, Port of Spain (
