Bali Guide
East Bali
The east of Bali is dominated both physically and spiritually by the towering volcano Gunung Agung, and the Besakih temple high on its slopes. The landscape ranges from soaring peaks through sweeping rice terraces, to the dry, rocky expanses of the far east. Many visitors speed through the east on their way to the beaches known collectively as Amed. However, those lingering for a day or two en route are rewarded with an authentic Bali of fishing and farming villages, market towns, prestigious temples and glorious scenery – all far away from the crowds.
The biggest draw is the coast, which includes the black-sand bays south of Gianyar, Amuk Bay and the peaceful beaches at Amed in the far northeast. There's excellent diving and snorkelling; Candi Dasa, Padang Bai, Tulamben and Amed are the best areas. The beaches of Amed are developing fast as they entice increasing numbers of visitors away from the more established resorts with peace and quiet, excellent accommodation and restaurants, and great coastal scenery.
