Around Tunis

    Map

With Tunis as your base, almost anywhere in northern Tunisia is accessible. And on a hot summer everning, there's no better way of enjoying the area than to get out of the city centre by catching the TGM train across the lake to one of the suburbs on the northern shore of the gulf, where the sea breezes clear away the city's oppressive humidity.

Overlooking the Gulf of Carthage to the east of Tunis, are the remains of Carthage, ancient Great Power and the enemy of Rome, and a little further in the same direction, the picturesque resort of Sidi Bou Saïd

La Goulette, with its Spanish fort and fish restaurants, and Hammam Lif, nestling below Jebel Bou Kornine – the mountain which stands guard at the bottom of the gulf – both make for worthwhile outings.

    Highlights

1 Carthage The remains of this legendary city lie scattered along the seashore and in the hills behind.

2 Sidi Bou Saïd A cluster of pretty whitewashed houses with cornflower-blue shutters and studded doors, perched on a steep headland high above the sea.
