Amakhala Game Reserve

    Two kilometres north of the Shamwari turn-off, Amakhala Game Reserve ( 042 235 1608, www.amakhala.co.za ; Price: R1001-2000) is a far more affordable option and is family-friendly too, offering children's programmes at some of the lodges. The area is stocked with the Big Five as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and many antelopes. The Bushman's River meanders through the reserve and you can go on a canoe safari, accompanied by a ranger, and sundowner cruises on a river boat. Accommodation comprises six indepedendently owned lodges that make use of the existing farmhouses on the reserve, as well as a camp where there are beds inside restored ox-wagons with private bathrooms – all with wonderful views. Rates start at R1000 per person (May– Aug), R1495 (Sept– April).

    Day safaris (daily noon–6pm; booking essential) include two game drives, a river cruise and lunch and cost R720 per person.
