3 Shangana 4km out of town on the R535 to Graskop 013 737 7000 or 013 737 8191 www.shangana.co.za Delicious African dinners (R233) cooked in massive pots over an open fire by the chief's wives; the menu can include crocodile in spicy peanut sauce, beef and honey-glazed sweet potato, with tropical fruit on skewers for dessert. Vegetarians are well catered for, with plenty of vegetables and a bean dish. You eat in huts and are served very graciously by women from the household. Meals are the climax of a tour of the village and an energetic show of dancing, included in the price.

Lunches, served on a wooden deck under cream umbrellas, include mushroom and tarragon pie and home-made pizza, while dinners feature the likes of crispy salmon or peppered fillet. Prices are reasonable and there's a kids' menu and play area. Opening time: Tues– Sat breakfast, lunch & dinner, Sun breakfast & lunch only
