The Inanda Seminary

It's strongly recommended that you visit Inanda in the company of a guide who knows the area well. From Ebuhleni, make your way back to the M25, and continue to the Inanda Seminary along a well-indicated route. The seminary, whose dignified old buildings give it an air of serenity, was established in 1869 by Daniel Lindley, an American missionary and pastor of the Voortrekkers. It's also the oldest secondary school for African girls in southern Africa, and played a pioneering role in the liberation of Zulu women. Staff members have always been drawn from all racial groups, which is why the school received no funding from the apartheid educational authorities after 1957. The story of Inanda between 1869 and 1969 is recounted in a book by Agnes Wood, Shine Where You Are. To return to Durban, simply turn tail and head east along the M25.
