Getting around

Johannesburg's public transport system leaves much to be desired: it's slow and unreliable, and practically nonexistent after commuting hours. Driving is very much the order of the day, though with patience and a bit of stamina it's possible to negotiate your way around the city by bus, and some areas are easily explored on foot. Avoid the city's train system, which has a poor reputation and very limited services.

For short journeys around the city, consider using private taxis, which should be booked in advance by telephone. This is an expensive option, however, as a simple journey to the CBD from the northern suburbs will cost at least R170.
