The Delta
Damietta (Dumyat)
Sited near the mouth of the eastern branch of the Nile, the port city of DAMIETTA became prosperous in medieval times, through its trade in coffee, linen, dates and oil. Nowadays, the only real reason to stay is as a base for bird-watching or beachcombing. Damietta is linked by rail with Tanta, Zagazig, Alex and Cairo, and by hourly buses (6am–5pm) or service taxis with Mansura and Cairo. Closer at hand are Port Said (30min drive along the causeway between Lake Manzala and the Med) and the beach resorts of the Central Delta, most importantly Ras el-Bahr.
