Mount Egmont
An elegant, conical volcano, Mount Egmont – also known as Maunga Taranaki, meaning “peak clear of vegetation” – dominates the entire western third of New Zealand’s North Island. Dormant since its last eruption in 1755, the volcano rises 2518m from the subtropical coastline and is often shrouded in cloud and snow, even in summer. The hike to the summit shouldn’t be underestimated, but it is manageable in a day for anyone reasonably fit.
